When clients ask us about upgrading their CCTV system, the most common question is: "Should I go IP or stick with analog?" It is a good question, and the honest answer is that it depends on your property, your budget, and what you need the system to do.

Here is a practical comparison — not a spec sheet, but a real-world guide based on what we see maintaining hundreds of CCTV systems across Bangalore.

What Is the Actual Difference?

Analog CCTV (including modern HD-CVI, HD-TVI, and AHD systems) transmits video over coaxial cable to a DVR (Digital Video Recorder). The DVR processes and stores the footage. Modern analog systems can achieve up to 8MP resolution, which is more than adequate for most applications.

IP CCTV transmits video as digital data over a network cable (Cat5e/Cat6) or Wi-Fi to an NVR (Network Video Recorder). Each camera has its own processor and can perform functions like motion detection, face recognition, and licence plate recognition at the camera level. IP cameras typically start at 2MP and go up to 12MP or higher.

Resolution: IP Wins, But the Gap Has Narrowed

Five years ago, IP cameras had a significant resolution advantage. Today, modern HD-CVI and AHD analog cameras can achieve 4MP–8MP, which is sufficient for most residential and commercial applications.

Where IP cameras still have a clear advantage is in wide-area coverage. A single 4K IP camera can cover an area that would require 3–4 analog cameras. For large open spaces — parking lots, warehouses, IT campus perimeters — IP cameras can reduce the total camera count while maintaining coverage quality.

For most apartment complexes, offices, and retail stores in Bangalore, modern analog cameras at 2MP–4MP provide perfectly adequate image quality for identification and incident review.

Installation: Analog Is Simpler

Analog cameras use coaxial cable, which is simpler to install and more tolerant of installation errors than Cat5e/Cat6 network cable. Coaxial cable is also more resistant to electromagnetic interference, which matters in industrial environments.

IP cameras require proper network infrastructure — Cat5e/Cat6 cable, PoE switches, and network configuration. A poorly configured IP camera network can have issues with bandwidth, latency, and camera dropouts that do not exist in analog systems.

For new installations in buildings without existing cable infrastructure, the cost difference between running coaxial cable and Cat5e/Cat6 is minimal. For upgrades to existing buildings with coaxial cable already in place, analog systems are significantly cheaper to install.

Maintenance: Analog Is Easier and Cheaper

This is where we see the biggest practical difference in our AMC work.

Analog system maintenance is straightforward: clean the lens, check the cable and connectors, verify the DVR is recording correctly, check storage health. A technician with basic training can service an analog system effectively.

IP camera maintenance is more complex: in addition to physical checks, the technician needs to verify network connectivity, check PoE switch port status, update firmware (camera and NVR separately), verify IP address assignments, and check for network conflicts. IP camera firmware updates can sometimes cause compatibility issues that require troubleshooting.

For large IP camera systems (50+ cameras), network management becomes a significant part of the maintenance workload. This is why enterprise IP camera AMCs cost more than equivalent analog AMCs.

Practical implication: If you are choosing between IP and analog for a system you plan to maintain yourself or with a basic AMC, analog is more forgiving. If you have a professional AMC provider with IP camera expertise, the maintenance complexity is managed for you.

Cost: Analog Is Cheaper Upfront and Ongoing

A typical 8-camera analog HD system (2MP cameras, 8-channel DVR, 1TB storage) in Bangalore costs ₹15,000–₹25,000 installed. An equivalent 8-camera IP system costs ₹25,000–₹40,000 installed, primarily due to the higher cost of IP cameras and the PoE switch.

Ongoing maintenance costs follow the same pattern: analog AMCs are 15–25% cheaper than equivalent IP AMCs due to the lower complexity.

The cost gap narrows as camera count increases, because IP cameras can cover more area per camera, potentially reducing the total number of cameras needed.

Smart Features: IP Wins Clearly

If you need advanced features, IP cameras are the clear choice:

  • AI-based motion detection (distinguishing people from vehicles from animals)
  • Face recognition (identifying specific individuals)
  • Licence plate recognition (LPR)
  • People counting (for retail analytics)
  • Perimeter intrusion detection (virtual tripwires and zones)
  • Remote access with full resolution (analog remote access is typically compressed)

For most residential and small commercial applications, these features are not necessary. For IT parks, large retail chains, hospitals, and high-security facilities, they can provide significant value.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose analog (HD-CVI/AHD) if:

  • You have an existing coaxial cable infrastructure
  • Your budget is under ₹30,000 for the full system
  • You need a simple, reliable system for a home, small office, or apartment complex
  • You want lower ongoing maintenance costs
  • You do not need AI-based analytics or high-resolution wide-area coverage

Choose IP if:

  • You are installing in a new building with Cat5e/Cat6 infrastructure
  • You need to cover large open areas with fewer cameras
  • You require AI-based features (face recognition, LPR, people counting)
  • You have a professional AMC provider with IP camera expertise
  • Your budget allows for the higher upfront and ongoing costs

Consider a hybrid system if:

  • You have existing analog cameras you want to retain while adding IP cameras for specific high-value areas
  • You want to upgrade gradually over time

The Bottom Line

Neither IP nor analog is universally better. The right choice depends on your specific requirements, budget, and the expertise of your maintenance provider.

What matters more than the technology choice is the quality of the installation and the consistency of the maintenance. A well-installed and well-maintained analog system will outperform a poorly installed and neglected IP system every time.
